Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. The Trump administration is preparing an imminent militarily attack on Iran, in the next stage in a regime-change operation aimed at returning the Middle Eastern country of 93 million people to neo-colonial subjugation and placing its vast oil reserves under US imperialist control and domination. The strike raises the necessity for its expansion into a unified movement against social inequality, bringing the organized power of the working class into direct conflict with the financial oligarchy, which is centered in New York City and has the Trump administration at its head. Trump's seizure of Greenland would spell the end of NATO, an outcome the European powers are desperately trying to avoid because they are not yet ready militarily to act independently without US support. The refusal to investigate Renee Good's killer, alongside FBI probes of her family and allies, marks a major escalation in the ruling class campaign to criminalize opposition and suppress the democratic rights of the working class. Fearing the consequences of Trump's actions, central bankers from around the world have declared their "full solidarity" with Jerome Powell. Prominent figures in film and music, and sports, have not been shy about condemning the Minneapolis killing. The reintroduction and expansion of conscription is a direct result of the military rearmament in the NATO war against Russia and the preparation for a Third World War. From the outset, the party's programme, policies and election promises were based on a fundamental lie: It presented itself as an anti-war party and a party of social justice, but defended the capitalist system that produces war and social inequality, and allied itself with the parties defending capitalist rule. The immediate target is opposition to Israel's imperialist-backed genocide in Gaza, but ultimately this campaign is aimed at stamping out all forms of political dissent by workers and young people. The Greens are promoting an inquiry that has nothing to do with uncovering the circumstances of the Bondi terror attack but is aimed at legitimising police-state repression. Workers and students have been speaking to the WSWS across the UK about the US invasion of Venezuela, the ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) killing of Renee Good in Minneapolis, and the imperialist agenda of the Starmer government. The US attack on Venezuela is exposing the collapse of the African National Congress' post-apartheid "non-alignment" strategy, intensifying internal divisions within South Africa's ruling elite as Washington pressures Pretoria to choose either itself or China. Government ministers are attempting to criminalise industrial action and intimidate all public sector workers who are fighting against austerity. Labour is protecting the system that ensures public funds to subsidise private landlords, while landlord incomes and asset values soar. The SEIU-UHW West bureaucracy announced a tentative agreement on January 10 and called off the strike—just two days before 15,000 nurses in New York City launched what has become the largest nurses' strike in the city's history.
