The central issue behind the government shutdown is the need for the working class to intervene to force the Trump administration from office and put an end to its criminal conspiracies for military-police dictatorship. The Israeli attack on the peaceful flotilla is a violation of international law, and the detention of those on board amounts to an act of state kidnapping. In addition to private sector layoffs unseen since April 2020, September 30 was officially the largest mass resignation of federal workers in US history with over 150,000 federal workers and contractors officially removed from the payrolls after accepting DOGE-induced buyouts. Tariffs on foreign films are part of Trump's authoritarian drive, aimed at censoring culture, protecting corporate profits, and ultimately imposing the burden of crisis on the working class. Fears of a possible stock market meltdown have been heightened by the recent $100 billion deal between the leading AI chipmaker Nvidia and OpenAI, which sparked the AI surge with its release of ChatGPT towards the end of 2022. This week's conference took the party's jingoism to a new and repulsive level, coupled with the usual pledges of austerity and war. The execution of Victor Jones, a survivor of horrific state-sanctioned child abuse at the Okeechobee School for Boys, even after the state formally recognized him as a victim, brings the state's execution total to 13 in 2025. Against vocal opposition from nurses and midwives, the union bureaucracy has yet again utilised the illusion that the deal is only temporary to impose exactly what the government demanded: miserly pay "rises" and the suppression of any organised opposition. The strike is at a decisive phase. Either workers throw out the corrupt apparatus and build a new leadership, organized in a rank-and-file strike committee and based on a strategy for victory, or the bureaucracy will end the strike with a betrayal. Strike action by 2,000 Greater Manchester bus drivers at Stagecoach, First Bus and Metroline scheduled for Tuesday to Thursday this week was largely suspended at the last minute by Unite in collusion with Labour Mayor Andy Burnham. NHS England's agreement with Unison confirms the preferred strategy of the Starmer government: inflict attacks on NHS workers via collaboration with the health unions.
