Every step the Trump administration has taken in recent weeks demonstrates the scope of this conspiracy. He has issued executive orders branding left-wing opposition as "domestic terrorism," summoned hundreds of generals and admirals to pledge loyalty to his regime, and authorized the use of "full force" against American citizens. His White House officials speak of the Democrats as a party of "domestic extremists" and insist that the military must be focused on the "enemy within."
If one places the government shutdown within this broader framework—the meeting with the oligarchs earlier this month, the glorification of Charlie Kirk, the endless denunciations of the "radical left," the deployment of troops to US cities, and the preparations for a massive assault on the working class—it is evident that a dictatorial plan is being implemented.
The Democrats, meanwhile, conduct stage-managed negotiations over a continuing resolution, issuing plaintive appeals for "bipartisanship." They know the shutdown is being used to shred democratic rights and to prepare dictatorial rule. But they will do nothing to stop it, because they share Trump's overriding commitments to the corporate-financial oligarchy. As for the trade union apparatus, it has maintained a complicit silence, limiting itself to toothless appeals for the administration to "get to work" and resolve the crisis.
The WSWS has exposed these developments, explained their political significance, and elaborated a program for the working class. We have stressed that the fight against dictatorship requires independent action by the working class, through the formation of rank-and-file committees in every workplace, school, and neighborhood, uniting workers across industries, regions, and countries.
