In his press conference announcing the militarization of DC, Trump delivered an obscenity-laden, Nazi-like rant to justify the military-police mobilization, lyingly declaring, "Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, maniacs and homeless people.... We're getting rid of the slums where they live."
No American president has ever used such language to describe the population of this country. Trump is steeped in the world view of Adolf Hitler, his favorite author, whose speeches were a regular feature of his bedside table, according to his first wife Ivana.
The military takeover of Washington is just one step in an unfolding effort to establish a dictatorship. Trump threatened Monday to deploy active duty military to cities such as Chicago and New York. On Tuesday, the Washington Post reported on secret plans by the administration for a rapid deployment force of troops to move into cities facing "protests or other unrest."
The Democratic Party, the union bureaucracies, and every institution that claims to defend democratic rights have responded with nothing but hand-wringing and empty words. They will do nothing to stop Trump's program of mass repression, social counterrevolution, and war.
The WSWS and the Socialist Equality Party warn that the working class cannot rely on these rotten institutions of American capitalism. The defense of democratic rights requires the building of independent rank-and-file committees in workplaces and communities, and the development of a mass political movement against capitalism and for socialism.
If you agree with this fight, support it now. Your contribution will help us expose the danger, reach workers around the world, and prepare the industrial and political action needed to stop dictatorship.
