Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. The arrest of over 530 people this weekend was the most significant mass political arrest in post-war British history. It is a major step towards a police state being established by the Labour government. The US immigration Gestapo is refusing to provide Rivas Velásquez, a Venezuelan man who nearly died at "Alligator Alcatraz" last week, medical care or access to his lawyers, even as his health continues to deteriorate. Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu held a phone call with US President Trump on Sunday and announced that the complete seizure of Gaza would be carried out "fairly quickly," as an airstrike was launched on a clearly marked tent of Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza City. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam's cabinet has publicly committed to disarming Hezbollah, in a move that threatens explosive consequences for Lebanon. The August 8 CDC shooting, fueled by conspiracy theories and political attacks on public health, left one officer dead and staff traumatized, exposing how years of anti-science rhetoric and policy dismantling have turned public institutions into targets for violence. The World Socialist Web Site continues to publish statements of support for the IWA-RFC investigation into the death of Dundee Engine worker Ronald Adams. "We prefer to speak out rather than continue walking in the footsteps of our fallen comrades. Our lives are worth more than copper," reads an open letter from subcontract miners. The attack on federal workers' ability to organize marks an escalation of Trump's attack on democratic rights and the purge of the civil service. The Canyon Fire sounds the alarm that austerity cuts, climate change, and political neglect continue unchecked, fueling more frequent and destructive wildfires with devastating consequences for working class communities. The open letter declares that, "To call what is unfolding [in Gaza] anything less than genocide is to ignore the overwhelming weight of evidence and the cries of those living—and dying—under siege." This is another warning of the scale of the job cuts and sweeping restructuring being demanded throughout Australia's 39 public universities. Safeway workers must reject the UFCW's concessionary deal, which hides wage cuts and job losses behind empty "highlights," and take the fight into their own hands as they prepare for a general strike. The inquest, while underscoring certain realities, including rampant racism within the police force, accepted the entire law and order framework that is responsible for such killings. Fiji charges coup leader with treason; Bangladesh president assassinated; Ethel Rosenberg arrested; France and Spain combine against rebels in Morocco About the WSWS The World Socialist Web Site is published by the International Committee of the Fourth International, the world Trotskyist movement, and its affiliated sections in the Socialist Equality Parties around the world.
