The Amazon boss decreed that the newspaper's editorial pages should exclude any opinion hostile to "free markets," i.e., capitalism. A recent report from Apollo Global Management estimated that 300,000 federal workers would be fired in the coming weeks, leading to an additional 600,000 contractors losing their jobs. Speaking before the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk accused Israel of an "unprecedented disregard for human rights" in waging its assault on Gaza. One of the first acts of Chancellor-elect Friedrich Merz (Christian Democrat, CDU) after the election was to invite the right-wing extremist Israeli Prime Minister to Berlin. Nealy 100 students occupied a hall at Columbia University's Barnard College to protest the expulsion of two students. Important resolutions were passed at two National Tertiary Education Union branch meetings to defend free speech, academic freedom and Randa Abdel-Fattah, who is being targeted for opposing the Israeli genocide. A Sydney high school educator was stood down after posting a video denouncing the witch-hunt against two Bankstown nurses goaded into making reactionary comments online by an Israeli provocateur. Tariffs on Mexico and Canada were threatened shortly after Trump's inauguration on January 20 but were delayed for a month after the Canadian and Mexican governments agreed to take action over the flow of the drug fentanyl into the US. In order to intimidate the social opposition, the Turkish government is trying to criminalise workers' struggles and support for them, while at the same time trying to show legal political organisations as an extension of a "terrorist organisation". Since Donald Trump's return to the White House, the conflict between the US and Europe—and Germany in particular—has intensified day by day. Even the end of NATO can no longer be ruled out. Stellantis workers learned this week that their profit sharing checks for 2024, before taxes, will be $3,780 compared to $13,860 the previous year.
