Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. This letter was sent to the Institute of Historical Research at the School of Advanced Study, University of London, which is sponsoring on December 2 an online seminar at which Professor Aidan Beatty will be speaking on "Gerry Healy and the WRP: Violence, Gender, and the Perils of Trotskyism." Aimed at setting the stage for a stepped-up region-wide confrontation with Iran, the agreement comes after the far-right Zionist regime has killed upwards of 4,000 people in its onslaught on southern Lebanon and Beirut, and largely wiped out Hezbollah's leadership. The strike in Italy by half a million workers is part of a global wave of struggles against inequality, war and authoritarian rule. The latest climate summit embraced the same policy that has been adapted since such climate talks began in 1995: the subordination of Earth's environment and the lives of those impacted to the corporate and economic demands of the United States and the other major capitalist powers. The adulation for Locke from the New Zealand political establishment is because of his role as a leading member of the anti-Trotskyist Socialist Action League in the 1970s and 1980s, which sought to tie workers to the Labour Party and block the development of a genuine revolutionary movement. In a revealing interview in The Nation, Sanders praised the anti-immigrant, warmongering campaign of Nebraska's Dan Osborn, who promoted Trump's "America First" program. Khan is in prison because he fell afoul of US foreign policy—above all, US-NATO war plans against Russia and China. Tehran is signaling its readiness to bargain with Trump, even as he makes clear that he intends to deal with Iran even more ruthlessly than during his first term, and that he will do so working in the closest concert with Israel, which is already waging war against Iran in all but name. US Capitol police and the FBI confirmed that investigations are underway of violent threats made against at least six Democrats in Congress and nearly a dozen nominees and appointees of the incoming Trump administration during the Thanksgiving holiday. This is vital history, from more than six decades ago, that the vast majority of today's global population knows nothing about. Responsibility for the rise of the far right lies primarily with nominally "left" forces, who have adapted to nationalism and supported NATO's war with Russia in Ukraine. The continuation of the strike into its second week reflects the determination of workers to fight. But to do so will require a rebellion against the United Workers Union bureaucracy. The mass arrests, presided over by Labor, point to ruling-class fears of growing social opposition to environmental destruction, social inequality and war. Reactionary bills rammed through Australian parliament amid worsening economic and political turmoil The "guillotine" vote to cut off proceedings meant that an avalanche of repressive and other pro-business legislation was imposed on the population without even the semblance of debate. A court ruling dismissing an anti-trust action by the state has cleared the way for Anchor Hocking to close its glass-making operation in Charleroi, eliminating the jobs of 330 workers. Lagarde said the strategy of the European Union to the Trump tariff threat should be negotiation not retaliation, but whether that is possible is another question. India: Bongaigaon refinery workers demand reinstatement of casuals; Bangladesh: National Tea Company workers still on strike; Western Australian power workers threatened with lockout; Australia: St Vincent's Private Hospital nurses strike in Victoria.
