Acting in direct response to demands from giant corporations and imperialist governments, the Beijing bureaucracy has unleashed a wave of infection and death. While pledgng to cut €13 billion per year from pensions despite mass popular opposition, Macron plans to raise military spending to €413 billion over the years 2024-2030. While there is no money for public healthcare and education, both in an unprecedented crisis, the war machine is being provided with a blank cheque. "It's very visible that Macron is more on the side of the bosses and not the population. You can see it every day. He wants to force us to work all the time, to create more and more precarious people." On Thursday, masses of workers across France went on strike against French President Emmanuel Macron's new attempts to impose pension reform. Biden's chief of staff, Ron Klain, is reportedly stepping down, to be replaced by multi-millionaire Jeff Zients, formerly the White House coronavirus coordinator. The numbers testify to the anger over the trajectory of the most right-wing government in Israel's history. However, the leading lights of the former "government of change" are seeking to maintain control, prioritizing the government's plans to weaken the High Court over broader social, economic and political issues. A rising tide of class struggles is underway in Portugal and internationally, three years into the COVID-19 pandemic and as NATO wages war on Russia in Ukraine. As part of the right-wing, pro-corporate program of the Workers Party government, the recent nominations point to a broad attack on teachers and public education in Brazil. The enormous heroism of protesters defying the murderous violence of the military and police has won the attention and admiration of workers and youth all over the world. Twenty-three days into the new year, the Gun Violence Archive, which tracks gun deaths and mass shootings in the United States, has recorded 37 mass shootings, or roughly 1.6 per day. The shooting was the second directed against the Alpha Project since the downtown San Diego shelter opened five years ago. The attacks on transgender people are part of a far-right campaign that is attempting to mobilize backward social prejudices and undermine democratic consciousness. The lenient sentence will further embolden far-right forces in Australia. Workers voted to authorize a strike by 94 percent in November. They are fighting for higher wages to meet the rising cost of living in Seattle, one of the most expensive cities in the United States. Retired New York City workers are resisting the plan of the city's Democratic administration and the municipal unions to transfer them into a privately run, profit-making Medicare Advantage plan. The removal of masks indoors will only facilitate a new wave of COVID-19 across the country as dangerous new variants spread. The craven worship of billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos by members of the Māori elite highlights the fact that the fundamental division in society is not race, but class. While CUPE's sellout materially weakened the education workers in their struggle, conditions remain highly favourable for the development of a mass working class movement against capitalist austerity and an end to real-terms wage cuts. With a couple of exceptions, the editor has chosen stories that in their form, language and examination of thematic ideas are highly accomplished, even if the collection as a whole bumps its head against certain objective limits. Taxi drivers, bus drivers and farmers have staged protests across Colombia in recent days, while on January 18 Argentine television workers held a 24-hour walkout over pay. While Istanbul's municipal government is not taking any precautions against an expected major earthquake, scientists are sounding the alarm over the dangers. Approximately six million people are already reporting that they did not eat due to lack of money in the past month and 76 percent of adults that they are having to try and cut back on spending.
