Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. The horrific collapse of American sprinter Noah Lyles at the Paris Olympics due to his infection with COVID-19 is a graphic exposure of the reality that the pandemic is ongoing and remains dangerous for the entire population. US and European news outlets have hailed what The Economist dubbed "The second battle of Kursk," referencing the World War II battle in which Soviet forces, then allied with the United States, France, and England, decisively defeated the armies of Nazi Germany. The killing of yet another senior Hamas official makes a mockery of the far-right Netanyahu government's claim to be interested in negotiating a ceasefire with Hamas, not to mention the posturing by its imperialist backers in favour of a ceasefire. The cuts continue the relentless downsizing and cost-cutting by automakers in the aftermath of the 2023 UAW sellout contracts at the Big Three. The job cuts were long expected. The workers are being made to pay for the ongoing sharp crisis in Hollywood and the profit drive of Wall Street and other financial sharks. As the Liberal government, backed by the trade unions and New Democrats, spend tens of billions on waging war around the world and enriching their corporate paymasters, growing numbers of people are forced to resort to permanently living in tents with virtually none of the amenities necessary for modern living. The union's response to the announcement has been nothing short of pathetic, confirming once again its role as a parasite on workers. Its response has been to do nothing—no pickets, no demonstrations, no rallies—to stop the closures.
