Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. The opening of the trial marks a new stage in an intense crisis at the highest levels of the American state that has been building for 50 years. This August will mark the 50th anniversary of the resignation of Richard Nixon in 1974 as a result of the crisis stemming from his campaign's break-in at the Watergate headquarters of the Democratic National Committee. On Friday morning, Israel carried out an airstrike on a military base in Iran near one of its nuclear facilities, further widening the war in the Middle East instigated by the imperialist powers. Students and faculty at Columbia University are mobilizing to oppose the police-state crackdown on democratic rights. The pleas from the semi-feudal Arab regimes for "caution" and "restraint" testify above all to their fears of an explosion from below. They point to the fundamental "polarity" between all factions of the bourgeoisie and the working class on which the struggle against war must be based. Latin America's far-right regimes act as provocateurs, in direct coordination with the CIA, while supposedly anti-imperialist "pink tide" governments issue bankrupt appeals to the UN. The WSWS spoke Friday with Zelda, a 23-year-old software engineer, who was arrested and fired by Google for participating in a sit-in to protest the company's complicity in the Gaza genocide. Effectively jeopardizing the right to organize any large protest in the US, the Supreme Court refused to intervene Monday to stop a lawsuit by a police officer seeking to hold a protest organizer liable for the act of one of the protesters. As one of the most globalised sections of the working class, postal and logistics workers have tremendous power. But this can only be realised by breaking the grip of the pro-company trade unions enforcing the dictates of the market. "We took an oath to do no harm," one doctor said. But "When I walk into my shift and see a full waiting room and I don't have the staff to take care of them ... that doesn't sit well with me." Exposing the alleged racism of the opera and its creators—George and Ira Gershwin and Dubose Heyward—has become a preoccupation of the postmodernist proponents of "critical race theory" and related obsessions with gender, sexual preference and other aspects of personal identity. Twenty-five years ago, two students at Columbine High School killed 12 fellow students and one teacher, and wounded 24 others, before committing suicide. Breaking from standard procedure, Democrats supplied the necessary votes to overcome far-right Republican objections to a series of military bills supported by majorities in both big business parties. The document explicitly names China as the target of a major military build-up, and unveils $50 billion in additional defence spending over the decade, on top of already record spending. Thousands of Uber and Didi rideshare drivers stop work in Western Australia against high commissions, while Korean electronics workers plan first strike in Samsung's 55-year history. The cuts will accelerate the decline in enrolments, which began in the 1980s as the result of the deliberate weakening of public education by Labor and Liberal-National Coalition governments. The intent of the facility's construction is to weaken the resistance of workers in North America as the U.S. economy gears up for military conflict with its competitors abroad. Teachers, parents and community members in Ann Arbor gathered this week at city-wide meeting speaking out against layoffs and attacks on public education. France has initiated the constitutional change to strengthen its grip over the strategically significant Pacific colony amid escalating preparations for a US-led war in the region against China. Pellegrini's election success is a distorted expression of the widespread rejection of the war against Russia, which the leading EU powers continue to escalate. The ban is part of an ever more sweeping and draconian ruling class crackdown on any opposition to its support for the Israeli genocide of the Gaza Palestinians. The gathering in Chicago came amid a number of high-profile protests throughout the country earlier in the day when demonstrators blocked major highways. Nurses and public sector workers can make no gains based on a strategy of pressuring the unions and the government. They must turn to the rest of the working class and mobilize its immense power in a counter-offensive against the entire austerity program of the ruling class.
