![]() Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. Democrats and Republicans approved massive additional funding to war against Russia in Ukraine, to Israeli genocide in Gaza, and to the US-led war buildup against China over Taiwan. The mass arrest of Columbia students and political attacks by the Democrats and Republicans have failed to suppress anti-genocide protests, while fueling growing opposition in the working class to the the attack on democratic rights. The draft Higher Education Act presented by the Berlin Senate is intended to enable university administrations to de-register students for "criminal offences" such as unauthorised lecture hall occupations, expressing prohibited slogans and other forms of protest. Israeli air strikes continue virtually every day as the Netanyahu regime prepares for an imminent ground assault on the southern Gazan city of Rafah. The fact that not a single Democratic representative voted against the over $60 billion Ukrainian weapons package reveals that there is no "lesser evil," between Democrats -including the phony-lefts- and Republicans. Hours after the Senate passed the reauthorization and expansion of warrantless surveillance by US intelligence just after a midnight deadline, Biden signed the bill into law on Saturday. The fact that Biden issued such a statement testifies to the extraordinary seriousness with which the government takes the credibility of the pro-war, pro-corporate union bureaucracy. While the large vote to unionize demonstrates the militancy of workers it will only be a matter of time before workers realize they are in a fight not only against corporate management but the UAW apparatus. US and Philippine provocations are deliberately fueling tensions over unresolved territorial disputes in the South China Sea. We workers have every right to take all action deemed necessary to protect our jobs, regardless or whether your choose to sanction them or not. If you will not fight the layoffs, then get out of the way so that UPS workers can do it ourselves. The trip underlined two things in particular: the aggressiveness with which Germany is resorting once again to militarism and war 85 years after the start of the Second World War, and the central role played in this by the formerly pacifist Greens. As the National Health Service launches its spring COVID-19 vaccination campaign, significantly fewer people will have access to a free jab and must pay for one or do without. Lee Chang-dong, also a novelist and screenwriter, directed several films in the 1990s and early 2000s that were highly and deservedly praised. The recent outbreak of a novel Mpox (formerly called monkeypox) virus, showing sustained transmission between humans with the deadlier clade I lineage, poses a public health to the DRC, the region and the globe. New Zealand survey finds 65 percent agree the economy is "rigged to advantage the rich and powerful" The Ipsos survey also found that 68 percent oppose the government's plans for greater spending on the military to prepare for war, which is being funded by cuts to vital public services. Rally for Mumia Abu-Jamal; Coup ousts fascistic dictatorship in Portugal ; Lausanne Conference on Israel-Palestine; German leader backs Dawes Plan Amid a skyrocketing cost of living, the Labor government and the unions have enforced a public sector wage freeze. The debate shows that both of the principal candidates will not challenge the interests of the ruling Mexican oligarchy and US imperialism.
