The New Year opens against the backdrop of a massive escalation of imperialist violence throughout the world. Genocide and nuclear war are being normalized. This brazen act of aggression increases the danger of an escalation of the Israeli onslaught on Gaza into a region-wide war, for which US imperialism and its European imperialist allies have long been preparing. The fingerprints of fascist forces, the state and the military are all over the conspiracy to bring down Gay. This letter opposing the ouster of Harvard President Claudine Gay was submitted to the WSWS by a Harvard employee. Millions of people around the world are taking to the streets to protest against the genocide in Gaza and the threat of world war. The SEP is calling on all those who are concerned to defend democratic rights of freedom of expression to register their opposition by sending protest letters to the relevant authorities. "People are waking up to the inequity of capitalism, which is at the root of a lot of problems in the world." Having little faith that the Sinai Postdoctoral Organizing Committee would fight for real gains, Mount Sinai postdoctoral fellows ratified a substandard contract. Soaring rents and home mortgage repayments are producing homelessness on a scale described by charities as the worst on record. On January 7, 1999, the Senate trial to impeach US President Bill Clinton began in Washington D.C.
