As North wrote, the judgement of history against those perpetrating these crimes will be merciless, “but that judgment will be delivered not only against individuals, but also, and more profoundly, against the social class that raised them to power and in whose interest they have committed their monstrous crimes against the people of Iran. Herein lies the significance of Trump’s Wednesday night rant. It exposed the irreversible political and moral putrefaction of the American ruling class.”
The war on Iran is inseparable from the war on democratic rights and the accelerating assault on the social programs on which working people depend. The same administration demanding unlimited funds for bombs and weapons is insisting there is no money for healthcare, childcare, education, and retirement. This is class policy: war abroad and class war at home.
In the past weeks, millions have poured into the streets in the largest demonstrations in American history. At the same time, a developing strike movement and growing resistance in workplaces points to the immense social power that exists to stop this descent into barbarism. As the statement explains, “the process of decay does not proceed without generating its opposite. The ruling class has moved far along the road of moral disintegration, but broad sections of the population have not followed it to the same destination.”
Outrage, by itself, is not sufficient. What is required is a politically conscious mass movement of the working class and youth, developed internationally and guided by a socialist program—one that stands in irreconcilable opposition to the corruption and brutality of the ruling class.
