Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. On Saturday morning, US President Donald Trump declared war on the third-largest city in the country, Chicago. Mass arrests have escalated both in numbers and in brutality, driven by the political imperative of silencing opposition to the Gaza genocide and demonstrating the readiness of the Starmer Labour government to do what is demanded of it in imposing the dictates of the ruling elite. Figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday showed that job creation in the US economy has stalled, with only 22,000 new positions created in August while the number of jobs created in the previous two months was revised down by 21,000. Workers must not accept this destruction of jobs and livelihoods. Steelworkers, auto workers, miners, postal employees and the broader working class face a common assault and must draw political lessons from their experiences. Three stand out. None of the basic issues that sparked the protests have been resolved despite the limited measures taken by President Prabowo and his government to placate widespread popular anger and resentment. Although India and Pakistan came to a shaky truce on May 10, India has continued its suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, with New Delhi now vowing that it will never return to it in its present form. Hundreds of nurses will hold a one-day strike at Kaiser Permanente Northern California over staffing, patient care and other working conditions. Evergreen Public Schools staff are continuing their strike in the face of threatened legal action by the district. Del Toral was a key figure in bringing to light the crime carried out against the people of Flint, Michigan by the state. He wanted to speak out on the efforts of the water experts who were vilified. President Trump has launched an aggressive campaign against the Smithsonian Institute, accusing the museum of promoting "anti-American ideology." Despite lofty claims of "historic unity" the bureaucracy is not preparing for unity and strength, but orchestrating another betrayal. The frontal assault on the welfare state underscores the reality that capitalist society is at an impasse, out of which the imperialist powers know no other way than social devastation, dictatorship and war. Behind Prime Minister Carney's technocratic formulation lies a ruthless plan: deep austerity for the working class while Ottawa shovels tens of billions into building up the military, expanding resource extraction, and shoring up corporate profits. The vote's outcome underlines the urgent necessity of flight attendants at Air Canada and across North America, as well as workers in every economic sector, establishing their organizational and political independence from the trade union bureaucracy. In the fourth-largest economy in the world, Democrats seek to normalize poverty, turning parking lots into state-sanctioned dormitories for working class students. Fuel prices trigger European protests; NYC teachers strike; US warplanes napalm Korean civilians; British TUC makes "left" gesture to Russian unions. Amid a media blackout, thousands of people in NZ joined protests on September 6, part of a global wave of demonstrations against Israel's genocide. The ban was part of a broader crackdown on student opposition, particularly to the Israeli genocide in Gaza. The FAST Party's victory resolves nothing—the basic issue facing all factions of the ruling elite is how to further impose the burden of the economic crisis on the population.
