Yesterday, January 6, 2025, the US Congress certified the victory of Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, the final procedural step before the fascist ex-president returns to the White House on Inauguration Day, January 20.
The re-election of the would-be American Führer demonstrates that his initial victory in 2016—and for that matter the January 6, 2021, attempted coup d'état—were not aberrations, but rather expressions of a fundamental realignment of politics in the United States and throughout the world, reshaping political structures to meet the needs of the oligarchy.
The world's richest individuals and corporations control resources on an unfathomable scale, with a growing number of centibillionaires whose personal wealth exceeds the GDP of the world's 120 poorest nations.
While the past five years have been dominated by the response of the ruling class to the capitalist crisis, the next five will be dominated by an explosive eruption of the class struggle, which is already under way.
The fight against the oligarchy is by its very nature a revolutionary task. Its wealth must be expropriated and its stranglehold over economic and political life abolished.
This requires the mobilization of the working class, on a world scale, to take political power, establish democratic control over the process of production, and reorganize society on the basis of socialism—that is, on the basis of social need, not private profit.
A crisis such as this one requires the most serious politics. I urge you to carefully read and study the WSWS New Year statement, consider its analysis, and make the decision to join the Socialist Equality Party.
