The accession of Finland into the NATO alliance is closely tied to US plans for a spring offensive in Ukraine, which will be accompanied by a major military buildup on Russia's border. Thousands of people were unaware of the looming disaster and are now either homeless or without power following the storms. Israel's attacks on Syria, undoubtedly coordinated with the Biden administration, support Washington's broader predatory interests in the region, but also reflect the increasing political turmoil within Israel itself. The Turkish parliament vote for Finland's NATO membership, without a single vote against, is a declaration of the commitment of the entire ruling class to imperialism. The Pabloite New Anti-capitalist Party is shielding the union bureaucracies as they work to smother the movement to bring down Macron. There is no "democratic" mechanism within the existing capitalist state for workers to make their opposition to austerity and attacks on democratic rights felt. The recent outbreaks of Marburg virus in Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania raises once more the specter of pandemic potential pathogens of a highly deadly nature for which the world is woefully unprepared. The Wickremesinghe government lives in fear of a resurgence of last year's mass movement that ousted President Gotabhaya Rajapakse and his government. It is clear that the marathon coalition meeting did not just discuss details of climate policy and infrastructure development. The government is preparing for a massive confrontation with the working class. With days to go before the Chicago mayoral run-off election, Brandon Johnson has continued his turn to the right. That major financial players ignored the flashing warning lights and continued to invest with Madoff points to the social psychology of a ruling class so manic in its pursuit of ever-greater personal wealth that it has become blinded by its own greed. More, however, is involved in this sociopathic outlook than subjective personality traits. The Liberal disaster in the seat of Aston increases the reliance of the capitalist class on the Labor Party, which is currently in office across the country, except for the small island state of Tasmania. An unstable minority Labor government in NSW is tasked by the ruling class with imposing major cuts to social spending and wages amid the deepest cost-of-living crisis in decades. The announcement was unusual in that it took place outside of a formal meeting of the oil-producing countries, "suggesting an element of urgency by the members taking part in the cuts," according to the Financial Times. The disaster tragically exposes the brutal working conditions faced by miners in China in the reckless drive for profits ahead of lives and safety. Having already abolished all COVID-19 protection measures, Germany's federal and state governments are now moving to counter all measures taken in the past. Yousaf's election follows a bitter campaign to select a replacement for Sturgeon, who unexpectedly resigned earlier this year.
