Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. With less than two months remaining in his term, US President Joe Biden has authorized Ukraine to use US long-range ATACMS missiles to strike deep inside Russia, crossing a "red line" that Russian President Vladimir Putin said could lead to direct war between Russia and NATO. The re-election of Donald Trump signifies the violent realignment of American politics with its underlying social reality: a society dominated by staggering inequality and ruled by a capitalist oligarchy. The WSWS spoke with Harvard student Bilal Irfan, who has been involved with the non-profit group FAJR Scientific, to assist in bringing aid to Gaza and conducting medical research in the Israeli offensive. Wolfgang Weber was an outstanding fighter who devoted his entire life to the service of the working class and the preparation of the socialist revolution. This demand is addressed not to the right-wing JVP/NPP government, parliament or the opposition parties—all of which are organically beholden to international finance capital. Rather it is addressed to the working class as a lever for mobilizing it against the bankrupt capitalist order, in the fight for workers' power and the socialist reorganization of society. The WHO said that in 2023 measles surged 20 percent above the previous year, underscoring the need to vaccinate against this dreadfully contagious disease. Farmers are beginning nationwide protests in France and railworkers have announced strikes starting December 11, as workers face a wave of mass layoffs announced across Europe and internationally. The breakdown of talks is an exposure of the supposed "victory" declared by the ILA after shutting down a three day strike by 45,000 workers in October. UCLA astrophysics professor Daniel McKeown became homeless after working a year with a paltry salary. McKeown has been retaliated against by the administration for his outspoken social media posts denouncing UCLA's refusal to renegotiate a livable wage for his work. London is the epicentre of a national emergency, accounting for over half of England's homelessness figures. A look at the background of those arrested, all of whom are between 20 and 30 years old, reveals they are not an isolated phenomenon, but have emerged from established neo-fascist structures developed over a long period of time. The new contract in the metal and electrical industries, which IG Metall agreed to without a workplace vote and despite the declared opposition of many members, marks the beginning of a new stage in the struggle against the union apparatus. This legislation is yet another attempt to rescue the corporate political elite in the face of deepening popular disaffection with the entire ruling class program of austerity and war. Police denied that the bombing of a restaurant in Melbourne had anything to do with the pro-Palestinian statements of its owners, even though one of the accused told them the motive was "the conflict overseas between Palestine and Israel." Myanmar-Thailand border clash; UN recognizes Palestinian "right of return";British Labour government nationalizes iron and steel industry; first Australopithecus skull discovered. The issue of the restitution of such artefacts as the token 26 statues to the Republic of Benin, so long rejected by the colonial powers, has now become entangled in broader geopolitical conflicts, with a few institutions now repatriating--or offering to repatriate—a handful as a public relations exercise.
