In total, the CDC estimates that there have been roughly 1,185,000 COVID-19 deaths in the US, but reliable estimates of excess deaths attributable to the pandemic place the real figure at over 1.4 million. An outbreak of dengue fever has hit Latin America and is expected to make 2024 the year with the highest number of cases and deaths in the region's history. Socialist Equality Party assistant national secretary Max Boddy calls on workers and young people in Australia to sign up as an SEP electoral member. The right-wing nationalist NZ First Party is seeking to whip up racial animosity towards Māori and immigrants in order to block a unified working class movement against austerity and war. The plans for greater operational control by the commander of US Forces in Japan underscore the fact that the Pentagon is preparing for war with China in the next immediate period, not many years down the track. Irrespective of the outcome of these tripartite meetings the pay rates will not provide a living wage or address the endemic poverty afflicting these highly exploited workers. The closure of the Tyson plant in Perry, Iowa, is an attack on workers that is backed by the unions, and can be opposed through the independent mobilization of rank-and-file committees across Tyson plants and workplaces in the United States and globally. More than 12,000 layoffs have already been announced by the logistics company, while the Teamsters union refuses to lift a finger to defend jobs. Protests continue against savage austerity measures as the Milei administration in Argentina marks its first 100 days in office, while 1,600 teaching assistants at McGill University in Montreal have begun strike action. Steve Hackett, the internationally acclaimed progressive rock guitarist and former member of the band Genesis, performed Foxtrot at 50 with his band at the Kalamazoo State Theater on Saturday night to an enthusiastic audience. Ford has been in the process of closing or reorganising entire plants in Europe, the US, Brazil, Russia and India for four years in order to increase profits at the expense of the workforce. However, works council representatives and the IG Metall have done everything in their power for years to ensure that resistance to this has come to nothing.
