Trump's State of the Union address on Tuesday was a grotesque spectacle—an open declaration of the program of dictatorship, war and oligarchic rule. On one side of the aisle sat Republican fascists chanting "USA" on cue. On the other sat a compliant Democratic Party, offering no serious opposition—only appeals for "competent management" of the same system of exploitation and militarism.
No one in that chamber spoke for the working class.
Trump lied brazenly about the economy while workers struggle with soaring prices and stagnant wages. He glorified the invasion of Venezuela and escalated threats of war against Iran. He erased Gaza and the ongoing genocide from existence. He unleashed racist incitement against immigrants and signaled preparations for voter suppression and political repression under the banner of "election integrity."
The Democrats, for their part, object not to the machine of war and repression, but to the crudeness with which Trump operates it. They defend the same capitalist system, the same trillion-dollar military budget, the same ICE apparatus, the same domination of society by a billionaire oligarchy.
The central lesson of the speech is this: The working class has no voice within the framework of the two-party system.
