In the weeks following the protests, the ruling class has responded not with concessions, but with a rapid escalation of its assault on democratic rights. This culminated in the White House's official proclamation of "Anti-Communism Week," a grotesque document denouncing socialism as "another word for servitude." As the WSWS explained in its response, the purpose of this ideological campaign is to outlaw left-wing politics and terrorize opposition, particularly among the youth.
Trump's proclamation coincided with a brutal campaign against immigrants, including the deportation of dozens to be conscripted and die in Ukraine, and a wave of Gestapo-style ICE raids targeting immigrant workers in major cities. At the same time, tens of millions have seen their food stamp benefits slashed, even after the end of the shutdown.
The Democrats are playing a central role in enabling Trump. Their response to opposition has been to bail out the Trump administration and end the government shutdown. Their message was clear: the real threat is not Trump, but the danger of mass opposition from below.
The social reality that underlies this crisis is the most grotesque inequality in human history. Food insecurity, homelessness, and debt have soared to record levels.
The World Socialist Web Site is the voice of the international working class. It is the only publication that analyzes these events from the standpoint of class and socialist politics. It alone tells the truth—about capitalism, about the war drive, about the betrayal of the unions, about the role of the pseudo-left, and about the revolutionary potential of the working class.
