In the week since the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the White House has escalated its campaign to suppress dissent, ban criticism, and sanctify Kirk as the martyr of a fascist movement.
Trump is not acting alone. He speaks for the corporate-financial oligarchy, whose wealth and power are incompatible with democracy. The billionaires who toasted him last week—at the White House and at Windsor Castle in the UK—are aligned with his drive to dictatorship, just as Germany's capitalists once rallied behind Hitler.
The Democratic Party, meanwhile, are acting as enablers. In Congress, Democrats joined Republicans to sanctify Kirk as a "national hero."
The Democrats are, like the Republicans, a party of Wall Street, the Pentagon, and the corporate-financial oligarchy. What they fear above all is not the rise of fascism but the eruption of a mass movement from below that threatens the foundations of capitalist rule.
The fight against Trump can only be waged via a complete break from the Democrats, Bernie Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic Socialists of America and the myriad pseudo-left organizations of the upper-middle class.
What is required is the mobilization of the working class, independent of both corporate-controlled parties. This means building rank-and-file committees in every workplace, school, and neighborhood—committees that unite all sections of workers and youth against dictatorship, war, and social reaction.
