Today, the most degraded event in American political history is taking place. A convicted criminal, con man, pathological liar, and fascist demagogue has returned to the White House. Donald Trump is once again commanding the world's most powerful military, armed with enough nuclear weapons to incinerate all life on the planet. The inauguration of Trump as the 47th president of the United States, just four years after his coup attempt on January 6, 2021, is not merely the result of his own machinations. This catastrophe has been facilitated by the Democratic Party's capitulation and the support of the financial oligarchy that rules America. The World Socialist Web Site warned over 20 years ago, at the onset of the criminal US invasion of Iraq, that American imperialism was on a "rendezvous with disaster."  That disaster is now unfolding—and the fight against it is urgent.
