Dear reader, On Sunday, the World Socialist Web Site hosted our 10th annual International Online May Day Rally centered on two interrelated themes: the war in Ukraine, which is escalating towards a nuclear Third World War, and the explosive growth of the international class struggle.
Sunday's rally presented a unified global perspective, as 19 speakers from 12 countries gave reports in 9 different languages, with subtitles available in English, Russian, German, French, Spanish, Turkish, Portuguese, Tamil, Sinhalese and Polish. The rally gave expression to the growing opposition of the international working class to imperialist war, social inequality, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, the threat of fascism and all the malignant consequences of capitalism.

Throughout this week, the WSWS will post each speech from the May Day rally, beginning today with the opening remarks by WSWS International Editorial Board Chairman David North. In his speech, North exposed the myth of the "unprovoked war" advanced by US-NATO politicians and the corporate media, analyzed the war in the Marxist framework established by Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky during World War I, brought forward the revolutionary history of the Soviet Union through an examination of the city of Bakhmut-Artemivsk, debunked the theory of "multi-polarity" advanced by academics and the pseudo-left and more. He concluded powerfully: The dangers confronting humanity should not be minimized. The first responsibility of a genuine revolutionary is to state what is. But this requires the recognition that objective reality presents not only the danger of World War III and the annihilation of humanity but also the potential for world socialist revolution and a stupendous advance in human civilization. The program of the Fourth International, the World Party of Socialist Revolution led by the International Committee, is to realize this potential by building a mass movement against imperialist war and fighting for the transfer of power to the working class to build socialism throughout the world.
