The catastrophes of Wang Fuk Court and Grenfell Tower are spectacular and tragic eruptions of the miserable, and entirely preventable, world housing crisis. They are not mere excesses, nor failures of regulation, they are an inescapable part of capitalism. The UN committee found the death toll in Israeli custody to be "abnormally high and appears to have exclusively affected the Palestinian detainee population" and noted that "to date, no state officials have been held responsible or accountable for such deaths". The Israeli military fired a drone strike in Gaza and killed two children in an eastern neighborhood of Khan Yunis on Saturday. The shooting of two National Guard soldiers, one of whom has died, has become the pretext for an assault on the democratic rights of immigrants. Workers at the Gabriel Passos Refinery in Brazil say they will continue their walkout for equal pay, while some 50,000 workers marched through downtown Montreal on Saturday to protest government policies. Last week, a powerful three-day nationwide strike movement against austerity halted public services, logistics, and industrial activity across Belgium.
