Dear reader, Here are the latest articles published today on the World Socialist Web Site. On Friday, the Trump administration unveiled a budget blueprint centered on a vast escalation of military spending. In its Fiscal Year 2027 budget request, the White House is asking Congress to approve roughly $1.5 trillion for "defense"—that is, for military aggression—which would be the highest level of military spending in modern history. Following Trump's threats to bomb Iran "back to the stone ages," Iranian air defenses shot down an F-15E Strike Eagle jet and an A-10 Thunderbolt in a single day—the worst US aircraft losses of the war. The political import of these maneuvers is that Congress, with the full complicity of the Democrats, will resume funding of Trump's immigration storm troopers without any limitations on their police state methods. Nexteer Automotive workers in Saginaw, Michigan have delivered an enormous rebuke to the United Auto Workers bureaucracy by voting down a UAW-backed concessions contract by 96 percent. Avi Lewis has been elected leader of the federal NDP on a pledge to revive Canada's anemic social democratic party by moving "left" and "fighting the billionaire class." While Dr. Aladwan is being branded a supporter of "terrorism", Israel's genocide, backed by Britain, has killed more than 100,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. At this year's Leipzig Book Fair, the concerns and horror over the global political situation were palpable. The escalation of war in the Middle East and the danger of fascism in America have shaken the cultural world. The CRT advances the "unity of left" with the trade union bureaucracy to contain and prevent workers from breaking with the pro-war parties of the capitalist state. The Special Air Service Regiment was evidently sent in mid-March, showing that nothing the Albanese government says about the war can be believed. The silence of these parties cannot disguise their ongoing backing for US imperialism and its war as is demonstrated by the handful of comments that have been made. The dangerous conditions at Anjun Industrial auto parts factory are not the exception but the rule around the world where workers are sacrificed in industrial slaughterhouses for profit. Mass layoffs and factory closures are being facilitated by the corporatist trade unions, which are seeking to channel workers' anger into the dead-end of supporting the opposition Labour Party. Doctors strike across Sri Lanka; Australian rail workers locked out by state government over limited work bans. Stanley Plotkin, the virologist whose RA 27/3 rubella vaccine has immunized hundreds of millions of children worldwide, has reacted to the ongoing dismantling of public health with undisguised despair. This report traces the science he built, the class forces that made it possible, and the way forward against the ultra-right assault on vaccines. The burning problems of the present day, genocidal wars, dictatorship and increasing social decline, bring to mind the claims made in the period immediately following the end of the Cold War.
